New Beginnings

First of all, I want to wish you all a great year! I hope all your dreams and hopes will come true.
The reason why I did not blog in such a long time is because I have been busy remodeling my house. After many years of just dreaming about it, I was able to finally do it! However, since we had many DIY projects, there were many mistakes made and I can say that it hasn't been an easy experience, but we learned a lot.
I love the contemporary style with a touch of glam, so I have decided to use cool neutrals for color palette.
I picked "Silver Setting" from Dunn-Edwards Paints for the interior and painted all the walls in this color. The main reason why I did this is because when it comes to bright colors I want to be able to change them as often as I want to. I plan to bring in the color using artwork, vases, pillows and other accents that I can easily change if I want to.
For the livingroom, I want to use green and yellows as my main colors, purple for the master bedroom and aqua blue for the office.

When it came to flooring, I wanted something durable and easy to maintain.
I had hardwood and laminate floors in the past and they got scratched easily, so this time I wanted something different.
Initially I wanted stained cement, but the color options are limited. So we moved on and decided to pick a tile that has that contemporary vibe.
Online I have seen many gorgeous rooms that have black flooringand we found a gorgeous large 24"X24" porcelain polished tile.

Well...here is where we made our big mistake. While in pictures, black flooring looks gorgeous, it is NOT practical at all! You can see every little thing on it - even a drop of water can leave a stain and cleaning it is a painful, time consuming process. Also, the gloss layer applied on top scratches easily.
After we installed this tile in the kitchen, we started seeing all the problems with it and decided to remove it and start again.
The new tile we picked is a 12"X24" rectangular dark gray porcelain tile.
Since it has rectified edges, the grout line we used was 1/16".

This tile will be installed in the entire house and in the bathrooms I plan to use mosaic glass tile for the walls.

Honestly, I cannot wait until we are done with this so I can start decorating.
Because I am impatient, I already bought this Crystal Metal Shade Chandelier from Overstock.
I plan to use it above the breakfast nook.

Also, I would like to buy this Crystal 5-light Black Shade Chrome Semi-ceiling Lamp for the bedroom.

Contemporary Lighting

I am remodeling my new house and for the past couple of weeks I was looking for contemporary lighting and I found a few interesting items.
My favorite is the Modern Drumshade Chandelier from George Kovacs: http://www.georgekovacs.com/.
This piece would look great in my dining room!

For the bedroom, I found two great options: George Kovacs Contemporary Modern Table Lamp for $300 and the Squared Block 3-way Crystal and Chrome Table Lamp from Overstock for only $96.

Decorative Blackboards for Kitchen or Weddings

I have recently added a few gorgeous chalkboards to my shop. I made these boards using vintage ornate pieces.
The Baroque Magnetic Chalk Board is silverplated and has a beautiful decorative design which incorporates seashells and floral motifs. This is an extra large message board which adds a chic note to a kitchen or wedding. Also, it makes a wondeful hostess or housewarming gift.

The Vintage Magnetic Chalkboard has a Tiffany Blue ribbon attached to it and is magnetic. This board would make a perfect inspiration board for an office or studio.

Cutting Edge Stencils

I always liked the elegant note wallpaper adds to a space.However, I was never fond of the idea of hanging it, commiting to it for long term and then..removing it of the walls.

Luckly, today there is a better alternative which allows you to achieve the same stylish decor without all the hassle: wall stencils.

Wall stencils allows you to be creative: you can stencil an entire room, an accent wall or even the ceiling.

In the last edition of "Better Home and Gardens" magazine, they featured a ceiling which had a damask stencil applied over. It looked like something Candice Olson would have done- very elegant and distinctive.

Also, you can use these stencils to add a decorative motif to your furniture. A very interesting idea I came accross is to use the for the back of bookselves. Also, if you apply them on a large canvas you can use as artwork or even as a headboard for your bed.

Recently, I had the pleasure of using a wall stencil I got from the CuttingEdgeStencils shop. CuttingEdgeStencils offers a large variety of stencils which are great for any decor: from modern, contemporary, classic to French Country and Shabby Chic.

Also, the stencils for the kids' rooms add a playful and chic note to the space.

I picked the Clematis stencil to create some artwork I need for my modern livingroom. Since I am currently renting, I can not use it for an accent wall, but using this stencil on a large canvas allows me to bring the color I need in my space.

From the start I was impressed with the quality of material this stencil is made out. Also, it is very easy to apply it as long as you use the proper tools and just the right amount of paint, the results are stunning.

How does your studio reflect your style?
SIMPLY FUN! Think Alice In Wonderland with a spin. Strong hues of red and white walls, juxtaposed with chandeliers and baroque print curtains, mirror and just when you think its heading down a particular alley in décor, its jumpstarts you into the modern world with wooden shelving and funky toy figurines adding that extra splash of colour. The effect is simply crazy but extremely fun to put together and that’s the way I like things to be! A kaleidoscope of sorts!

What is the favorite part of your studio?
Its got to be the bed! Back in our country of Singapore most of us do not have the luxury of space to accommodate a studio in our apartments. Due to such space constraints, my bedroom naturally doubles up as a study and working studio! It’s a tight space but I would say everything is within easy reach. It certainly helps though that I have a mighty long desk to work with!

What pieces in your studio inspire you?
I do not link my inspiration to any item/s or setting in particular for I believe that inspirations are all over and its just a matter looking hard enough for them. However, having said that, I did start off my current line of tree accessories holder and centerpiece with the pseudo ghostly trees that I handpainted on my wall years back. My list of muses extends as far as watching Animal Planet on television to licking popsicles in bed.

Do you have any handmade or vintage decor pieces?
Unfortunately I do not have any vintage décor pieces yet BUT hold your horses as I do have some ideas up my sleeves that involves a mash up of different medias, styles and periods to come up with pieces that I assure you are going to be stunning!

What is favorite color palette and how did you implement this in your space?
I do not have a particular favourite color palette but i do normally experiment with the safer colours like black and white first for general receptivity before delving into more obscure color selections for niche consumers. For someone like me who love all kinds of color mixtures, prints and textures, I particularly enjoy embracing challenges to create beautiful works out of the plainest colors.

What is the one tool used in your creation process you treasure the most?
It has got to be this pen-cil that I bought from Japan that allows me to switch between colors and function of a pen and pencil simply from the way I hold it. Talk about design! I suspect it’s a ball bearing that helps the switch within but I guess I will never know until it dies on me! Fingers crossed. This pen-cil has been such a handy tool for me to pen down my thoughts, make doodles, take measurements and I simply adore the simple aesthetic look of it! You can never tell nor imagine the complexity of it with just one look.

What are the books or magazines that inspire you?
I simply adore a monthly magazine published locally here in Singapore called Home and Décor. Lots of visuals of interesting products, home ideas right down to practical home solutions and features articles of both local and abroad. For one, I am a really visual person and dig the neat layout of the magazine.

What changes/upgrades would you like to make in the future?
Not too much to ask for but, here goes:

1) A Standalone Studio

2) Not just any studio but a full glass studio (akin a greenhouse)

3) On top of that, make it a rotating one that offers me a stunning 360 degrees panoramic view all day. (This will so drive my creative juices crazy)

4) Anywhere above the 20th floor sounds really nice

5) Oh, and lastly, a mega collapsible storage space that tucks my products and equipments neatly underground.

Now, that’s not too much to ask for is it?

How does your studio reflect your style?
I work at home. My studio placed in veranda, there is a lot of light,
air and space. I still have a special wardrobe, because I work with
fabric and need space to keep it. My place to work is my big table.
But as I’m creative person it’s always in disorder) And I always
fight with my husband to keep my table as I want. For me it’s not
disorder but MY order. If I have all things on the table like want my
husband I lose inspiration. I think all creative persons are like me.

What is the favorite part of your studio?
I like to sit with notebook on the left part of the table for edit photos in the morning.

What pieces in your studio inspire you?
There are flowers behind my work table and on the left of it. I like
to look on it. Flowers are my passion! I have balcony full of flowers.

Do you have any handmade or vintage decor pieces?
All furniture in veranda including my table are vintage. It have at
least 40 years. Support for flowers is vintage too.

What is favorite color palette and how did you implement this in your
space?
I like blue tones – for me are colors of sky and freedom. I like red –
color of passion, white because it’s color of purity. I painted wall
in the kitchen beside veranda and these are flowers: red poppies,
white camomilles and blue campanulas. I like bright colors – colors of
life. You can see it in my shop.

What is the one tool used in your creation process you treasure the most?
My Sewing machine, it’s Pfaff Select 3, and my camera. For my 30 birthday
this year my husband made me a gift – new camera Canon G11.

What are the books or magazines that inspire you?
I like Russian magazine “Around the world”. It’s interesting to read
and always has amazing photos.
The books of M.Muller and son are inspire me strongly. These books are about designing clothes.

How does your studio reflect your style?
The furniture is black and white, much like my artwork, and it’s small, much like myself! I’m afraid this is still a fairly new house and a bit austere for my taste.

What is the favorite part of your studio?
The studio is also my library and my photo studio where I work with my models. So quite a lot to choose from! I do adore my books and they bring me such joy and tranquillity, so I will have to go with the library.

What pieces in your studio inspire you?
I have a section of the wall where I keep my newest pieces – they never last, though, I am too much of a perfectionist and every time I look at one of my own artworks I find new flaws, so they’re on permanent rotation. I lovingly call it ‘the wall of shame’. (OK, not so lovingly.)

Do you have any handmade or vintage decor pieces?
There’s very little room for that, as most of my walls are covered in books. But you can see a rather pretty piece of gothic architecture out of my studio window – Norwich Cathedral, 100% hand made! I never get tired of how the light falls differently on its spire each hour of the day.

What is favorite color palette and how did you implement this in your space?
I spoke of my black and whites earlier – I didn’t have that concept in mind when I bought my studio furniture, but it must have been a Freudian thing, as it miraculously turned out to be black and white.

Strangely enough, though, if someone asked me, not related to art, what my favourite colour was, I would say red. And my dresses would prove that. What can I say? I’m a person of many contradictions.

What is the one tool used in your creation process you treasure the most?
My lovely brain!

What are the books or magazines that inspire you?
Art books and hours of longingly gazing at old masters’ pieces. But I read so much in general, there’s no telling what will pop into my mind and come to life on my paper.

What changes/upgrades would you like to make in the future?
I would like an obscenely spacious studio. So spacious, that I’d be able to swing a cat in it and the cat would actually live to tell the tale.

How does your studio reflect your style?
I love bright colors and warm weather but I hate clutter. It's the main reason why my studio is in my 12 x 18 "sun room". I am able to take advantage of the heat and with all the bright light, I can see if there is clutter or debris lurking around the space.

What is the favorite part of your studio?
My favorite part of the studio is my computer of course. I can't live with out it! I actually use a Mac laptop to print all my packaging and labels and use my Iphine when I'm laying down in bed or in the kitchen to check my emails.

What pieces in your studio inspire you?
I am inspired by my world travels. There is a painting on my wall above my workspace desk from a favela in Brazil from a young boy. I actually didn't want to buy it because it was sloppy on the corners but my husband really wanted to help the kid out. We wound up buying it anyway along with a similar painting, which you can't see in the photos, from another boy whose work was much neater. The two paintings are lined up on top of each other, kind of like a before and after. They always remind me that there is always room for improvement no matter how many other products out there that may be similar to your own.

Do you have any handmade or vintage decor pieces?
I handmake everything! I am a self titled frugalista. See that light hanging from the ceiliing? It's a curtain rod with an ikea light kit wrapped around. I got the the light shade from family dollar.

What is favorite color palette and how did you implement this in your space?
My favorite color palette is grey and yellow. My living room is decorated in this color scheme. The sunroom is an extension of the living room so I hung up some printouts and put them in yellow and silver mattes. The curtains are also that color. However, my favorite color is pink. You can clearly see my obsession with the color around the studio space.

What is the one tool used in your creation process you treasure the most?
I really treasure my glue gun. I'm not even sure if that is the old one or new one or my desk. They both are so beat up and over used! I've tried tack glue, fabric glue, even elmer's glue, but the glue gun is the best!

What are the books or magazines that inspire you?
I like fantasy and over-dramatic books so my favorite books are the Harry Potter series, Night, the Twilight Series, Abraham Lincoln:Vampire Hunter and the Shopaholic Series. I don't read a lot of magazines anymore but I look at U.S. Weekly every once in a while to see what accessory and clothing trends celebrities are wearing.

What changes/upgrades would you like to make in the future?
In the future, I would love to have my items sell in several boutiques. I haven't had much success out here in Albuquerque because fashion isn't really a major part of life like it is in my hometown of N.Y.C

How does your studio reflect your style?
Well, I believe in surrounding yourself with things that you love and also items that are practical. Nothing is too fussy or matchy matchy. My studio is a mish mash of things that I love, and collected over time. There are some new pieces, too, like the shelf and work table. So I guess that's my style - time-worn and new items together, not too fancy, and definitely functional.

What is the favorite part of your studio?
My work table. natural light comes in through the window over it, and my paints and brushes are all within reach.

What pieces in your studio inspire you?
I have a little inspiration area in one corner. I attached ribbon to two walls, and use it to hang inspiration images or artwork with little binder clips. it's very simple, but it works for me.

Do you have any handmade or vintage decor pieces?
Yes! The chairs in the studio are from the attic of the house where my husband grew up. They are a little rickety, but sweet. I recently made the curtains from lovely vintage fabric that I found at the thrift store. they are a pretty shade of wheat yellow with tiny white flocked polka dots, which is so cute!

What is favorite color palette and how did you implement this in your space?

I like earth tones, a lot of browns, greens and blues. I tend towards those colors in my work. and I also love faded colors. since I am unable to paint the walls (I rent), color has been brought in with wood tones from the furniture, the curtains, and my own paintings.

What is the one tool used in your creation process you treasure the most?
I love my table top easel. It's nice and sturdy. When I'm not working, it functions as another display for a half-finished or completed painting.

What are the books or magazines that inspire you?
I love online magazines like lonny, rue, and i just started getting into cellardoor {from the uk}. i also treasure my audobon 'birds of america' book, that i bought when i first moved to portland. i'm a sucker for lovely bird illustrations!

What changes/upgrades would you like to make in the future?
Someday, I would love a nice big studio with tons of natural light and maybe even a bed to take naps! A girl can dream! for the short-term, I need to find a better way to store finished paintings. I'm running out of space in my apartment!

My studio/work area is furnished in vintage pieces. I was raised by parents who lived thru WW1&2 and The Great Depression. We made due with what we had, re-purposed(long before it was the norm) what we could. Many of the pieces are family, many my husband and I purchased. Vintage/antique give off a warmth that I feel comfortable with. Many of my jewelry pieces contain vintage components. I have favorite antique fairs that I frequent, scouring for vintage pieces//components to incorporate into the jewelry I create.
As for my favorite part of my studio, the comfortable chair and vintage light. I've had the chair since childhood and the light was rescued from a potato barn and restored by my husband.
The most inspirational piece is the Oak armoire which holds my finished pieces. It is solid and built to last generations. I like to create well made pieces that will last more than one season. Being from the frugal family, we utilized personal items that were seasonless. I like to think my pieces are that, with a few exceptions of whimsy.

My color inspiration comes mostly from nature.
I look through botanical books that my Mother had to see what colors go well together and like to walk thru the nearby woods/park as well. Earth tones seem to be my favorite.
As for my favorite tool, well my Ott light of course. Reduces eye strain and provides a natural light that doesn't skew colors. My newest and next favorite tool is a stand with magnifier and clip arms which makes soldering silver so much easier!
My all time favorite magazine for this craft is Bead Style and their specialty books/magazines. My "6th sense" somehow guides me to put a look together with just the right materials. It's like being a good cook and spotting a recipe knowing the ingredients together will taste good.
As for my future plans, enhancing my wire wrapping skills and learn to fuse glass and create my own beads/pendants. Retirement is on the horizon and I won't have any lack of things to do or create. Staying active, physically and mentally and challanging oneself on a daily basis is the key to health and a fruitfull existence.

How does your studio reflect your style?
Well as you can see it is not much of a studio! My kiln resides in my unfinished basement, and I get a corner of the office for my glass work! I would describe my "style"' as colorful, bright, and organized. I think I have definitely achieved the colorful and bright merely because of the colorful glass materials laying around! As for the organization, while I do have bins that are labeled, I just dont have enough space yet to be as organized as I want to be. One day... :)
What is the favorite part of your studio?
My favorite part of my studio is the radio! Ok I know that's probably odd, but it really is the best part at the moment. It keeps my mind off of the clutter and lack of space! LOL I have a great studio drawn out in my head that I will one day have (cross your fingers). It is painted lime green, and has white shelves and cubbies everywhere for me to display my artwork and to hold my materials!

What pieces in your studio inspire you?
You'll see a rainbow of colors lined up against the back wall of my workspace. This is glass frit or little bits of glass. The punch of color against the back wall helps me to get inspired. I also just love working with glass frit. It is so versatile and unique!

Do you have any handmade or vintage decor pieces?
Unfortunately I do not at the moment. This fits into my dream studio though! I have several pieces of art picked out on Etsy that I would just love to buy!

What is favorite color palette and how did you implement this in your space? As long as its bright it fits into my favorite color palette! You'll notice throughout my store on Etsy that everything has tons of color. I use every color of the rainbow and love it!

What is the one tool used in your creation process you treasure the most?
My kiln. The kiln was a huge splurge. It is THE item that enables me to work on my passion! Without it I wouldn't have been able to find this amazing hobby and keep doing it!

What are the books or magazines that inspire you?
I do most of my reading online. I always read Rachael Ray's new recipes...I mean you cant be inspired unless you eat good right?!? I love reading blogs about fellow Etsians that have succeeded. I also get a lot of my technique tips from a website called Glass Fusing Made Easy...they always have new things to try to enhance your skills!

What changes/upgrades would you like to make in the future?
My future studio: Will have a tile floor so that I can have my kiln in the same room! It will have lime green walls, white shelves and cubbies, my radio of course playing country music, and lots of natural light! I will have bright unique art adorning the walls, with my glass items scattered throughout. There will be a place to cut my glass, a place to have my computer, and a staged area to take beautiful photos of my items. It will be my favorite room!

How does your studio reflect your style?
As someone who decided to major in economics, it follows that I’m all about efficiency. Dedicated places for tools, supplies, and stock make for stress-free creating – and give me an incentive to keep things organized! When it comes to fashion, I enjoy balancing light and dark hues. My workspace reflects this too, in that there is a lot of black and gold to ground the light pastel colors.

What is the favorite part of your studio?
I recently bought a new paper press, and it is insanely fun to work with. I think a lovely package is just as important as a lovely product, and this has made the process much easier.

What pieces in your studio inspire you?
I really adore my art deco girls (Nancy and Helena) from Etsy seller matouenpeluche. I also keep a few trophies around from my high school Thespian days, when I was (among other things) a costume designer. I don’t know how I managed to turn out costume after costume the way I did, but reminding myself of that serves as wonderful inspiration!

Do you have any handmade or vintage decor pieces?
My desk, bureau, and chair are all vintage, though I'm not sure of their exact age. They’ve been with me since I was a very small child, and have seen numerous uses and coats of paint. The collage on the wall is a piece I made last summer, by aging sheet music in coffee and tea.

What is favorite color palette and how did you implement this in your space?
Aqua blue is my favorite color, and when I found spray-paint in precisely the shade I wanted, I used it to attack pretty much everything in sight! My jewelry box, multiple picture frames, and what used to be a napkin holder reflect this. I have a vintage Anchor Hocking tumbler exactly the same hue, and it currently serves as a vase for silk flowers.

What is the one tool used in your creation process you treasure the most?
I’ve used the same jewelry pliers for nearly half a decade. Any other pair just wouldn’t feel quite right.

What are the books or magazines that inspire you?
Reading The Great Gatsby (and later, The Beautiful and Damned) really shaped my perception of the “Roaring Twenties.” I tend to create with that aesthetic in mind. As I want my jewelry to appeal to the modern woman, I keep on top of trends with Marie Claire and Lucky.

What changes/upgrades would you like to make in the future?
Right now I have a combination studio/bedroom/study space, which isn’t conducive to creativity 100% of the time. It would be great to have a room in my house set aside for artistic pursuits, including sketching and giving sewing lessons.

How does your studio reflect your style?
My studio is all me! it’s the one room in the house that totally reflects me. I have stuffed it full of everything I love.
My style is vintage, nature museum, meets glitter and lace. In it you will find everything from found bird nest to spools of lace.

What is the favorite part of your studio?
I really love my table. My husband and I made it together out of salvaged cabinets and a drafting table. I covered the top with antique dictionary pages. I love that its homemade by us both.

What pieces in your studio inspire you?
My inspiration board.
I have a little shelf under my inspiration board that I made from salvaged wood trim from my parents farm house. I hang pieces of art I’m working on or little bits of things that are inspiring me at the moment.

Do you have any handmade or vintage decor pieces?
I think most of everything is handmade or vintage!
I have some really great vintage white frames I found for .25 cents at a flea market. I collect antique button cards and display them in one. The frames always seem to be visitors favorites. I also have Millie my vintage mannequin. She makes a great studio mascot.

What is favorite color palette and how did you implement this in your space?
My favorite color is aqua. I love aqua, cream, and a little pink together. My walls are aqua. Aqua is also supposed to create a creative mood.
The furniture in my studio is cream. I like to add vintage millinery, lace, and ribbons in pink for a girly feel. I use jars to store many of my supplies so I can see all the pretty things I have collected.

What is the one tool used in your creation process you treasure the most?
I can’t pick just one! I use and love all of Tim Holtz’s tools and inks. I couldn’t live without them.

What are the books or magazines that inspire you?
I love Somerset Life, Better Home And Gardens magazines and the book Art Making Collections & Obsessions.
What changes/upgrades would you like to make in the future?
I would love to add a chandelier above my table and change the outside door to a French door.
